What to Do When Visiting the Cave of Hira?

Cave of Hira (غار حراء‎) lies atop Jabal al-Noor, also known as the Mountain of Light, about 4 km northeast of the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) in Makkah.
This is the sacred place where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an from the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). It marks the beginning of Islam’s divine message and is one of the most visited spiritual sites in Saudi Arabia.

What to Do at the Cave of Hira?

For Muslim travelers, the Cave of Hira (Ghār Ḥirā’) is one of the most significant sites in Islamic history. For those permitted to enter Makkah, it’s a place of powerful atmosphere and stunning views. Here’s what you need to know and what to do there.

1. Hike Up Jabal al-Nour

The main activity is the spiritual and physical climb up Jabal al-Nour.
The mountain trail has rough stone steps and can be quite steep. Carry water, a hat, and comfortable shoes.
The hike is both a religious act of reflection and a fitness challenge. Many pilgrims chant prayers or recite Qur’anic verses during the ascent.
Tip: Pause occasionally to admire the stunning views of Makkah from the upper sections — it’s an incredible perspective of the Holy City.

2. Visit and Reflect at the Cave

Once you reach the summit, you’ll find the Cave of Hira, a small and narrow chamber about 3.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide. Spend a few moments in silent reflection or prayer (dua). Be respectful—space is very limited, and many pilgrims wish to enter. Avoid overcrowding or staying too long inside to let others experience it.

Note: Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the city of Makkah, including the area around Jabal al-Nour.

3. Appreciate the Historical Significance

While you can’t expect lavish structures or tourist facilities, the Cave of Hira’s simplicity is its power. This is where the Prophet (PBUH) meditated and received divine guidance that transformed the world. Many pilgrims come to strengthen their faith and connect spiritually with Islamic history.

4. Take in the Panoramic View of Makkah

From the mountain peak, you can see:

  • The Masjid al-Haram and Clock Tower (Abraj Al-Bait) shine in the distance.
  • The arid yet breathtaking landscape of Makkah’s mountains.
  • It’s a moment of serenity and gratitude after the climb.
