Overview of the Makkah Royal Clock Tower

The Makkah Royal Clock Tower is the centerpiece of the Abraj Al Bait, a government-owned complex of seven skyscraper hotels designed to accommodate pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah. Standing at 601 meters (1,972 feet) with 120 floors (the number may vary slightly based on technical floors), at 601 meters, it is one of the tallest buildings in the world, currently ranking among the top five globally. Each of the four clock faces has a diameter of 43 meters, making them the largest clock faces in the world, visible from up to 25 kilometers away.

The complex, completed in 2012 at a cost of $15 billion, was developed by the Saudi Binladin Group as part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project to modernize Makkah for pilgrims.

Why Was It Built?

The tower was constructed as part of the Abraj Al-Bait complex, designed to accommodate the millions of pilgrims visiting Mecca each year. It also serves as a symbol of Islamic modernity and Saudi Arabia’s architectural ambition.

Key Features of the Clock Tower

Clock Faces

Each of the four clock faces is 43 meters in diameter, illuminated by 2 million LED lights. Arabic calligraphy displays “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great) on the north and south faces and the Kalima Tayyiba (“There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is His Messenger”) on the east and west.

The clocks are set to Arabia Standard Time (UTC+03:00), not Mecca Time as initially proposed. The minute hand is 23 meters long, and the hour hand is 18 meters.

Spire and Crescent

A 93-meter spire tops the tower, featuring a 35-ton golden crescent made of composite materials and covered in gold mosaic, serving as one of the tower’s most distinctive features

The crescent at the top of the tower is an iconic architectural feature. It contains technical and maintenance areas, with occasional facilities for prayer. The tower’s lighting system marks prayer times with powerful beams visible across the city, complementing the call to prayer from Masjid al-Haram.
